Former Late Model Champ
to Run Limited NCRA Slate
PARK CITY,
Kan. (May 9, 2007) – A former series champion plans
to run a partial schedule this season in the O’Reilly NCRA
Late Model Series, presented by ICM/Ethanol.
“I’m going to hit the
majority of them but I don’t know if I’ll be able to make
them all or not,” said 2000 series champ Tony Gregg. “I
probably won’t be able to run for the championship due to
other commitments.”
He hopes to make 10 or
11 of the series’ 16 races and might run more if he does
well.
Since taking the title
in 2000, Gregg has mostly raced close to his Hastings, Neb.,
home. He drove a modified for a while, but was in a limited
late model last season.
Tony stepped back into
a late model at the July 22 NCRA show at Doniphan, Neb., and
finished 21st in the feature. That was his first time with
the series since winning the title.
He is returning to the
NCRA mostly to help Ince Race Cars. His cousins, Doug and
Dale Warner, own the Minden, Neb., company.
“I’ve been helping
them get their chassis going,” Tony said. “My dream has
always been to do that type of work, and it’s been fun
trying to help them out.”
He also found out that
driving a limited late model wasn’t much fun.
“It just wasn’t for
me,” he said. “After you’ve run the big cars with all the
speed you could want, it’s hard to go back to a limited
class and have any fun.”
Gregg began racing
after he graduated from high school in 1980. When he’s not
behind the wheel of a racecar, he’s behind the wheel of a
big rig. He’s a truck driver for Gregg Brothers Trucking, a
cattle-hauling business owned by his dad and his uncle.
Tony will run a
Ford-powered Ince chassis this season and looks forward to
again dicing with 2002 series champion Kyle Berck, who will
run the full schedule.
“We raced together at
Doniphan each week and chased IMCA points in the late model
series,” he said. “There is a little bit of rivalry there,
but I have a lot of respect for him.”
