Purkey Sets NCRA Record with Victory at Nebraska Raceway Park

GREENWOOD, Neb. (May 27, 2007) – Al Purkey saved the best for last and set a new NCRA record in the process during the O'Reilly NCRA Late Model Series event presented by ICM/Ethanol Sunday at Nebraska Raceway Park.
  Purkey roared off the final turn to beat leader Jeremy Payne to the finish line and win the 50-lap main event. The win was Purkey's 25th career NCRA victory and put him on top of the all-time victory list breaking the tie he held with the late Larry Phillips. Phillips set the record in the mid eighties and it held for over 20 years. But Purkey will have to be looking over his shoulder as two-time defending champion Kelly Boen is close behind with 21 victories.
The feature was a co-sanctioned event and as a result started a record 32 cars. Terry Phillips, the son of the late Larry Phillips, took the early lead and pulled away. Boen worked his way up to challenge Phillips after being involved in a crash that sent him to the rear. In the closing lap Boen pulled inside of Phillips and reportedly squeezed Phillips against the wall. Phillips then made contact with Boen in the corner and the yellow came out. Phillips was black flagged for rough driving. Boen was credited with a 21st place finish and Phillips finished 32nd.
Payne inherited the lead on the restart but Purkey was right behind and made his move off turn four for a record setting victory. Larry Clawson, John Anderson and Kyle Berck rounded out the top five.
