Smith
Outruns Boen at Lincoln County Raceway
By Chris Martinez
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (June 29, 2007) –
Lincoln County Raceway was the site of the third event of
the 2007 season and the first night of the late model Speed
Week. Co-sanctioned by the NCRA and the Colorado Late Model
Association (CLMA), 39 drivers were on hand to contend for
the 23 starting spots in the 30-lap feature.
Five heat races were run with the top 12 in passing
points lining up in the feature. Everyone else needed to
battle for the last spots via two B-bains or hope for one of
the three provisionals.
Jim Beaman battled hard with Scott Daily to win the first
heat. Delbert Smith won heat #2 after the original winner
was disqualified in a post-race inspection. Kelly Boen
looked like he was back in 2006 form with a win in heat #3.
Corey Zeitner showed the crowd why he is the leading rookie
in NCRA points with a great drive in heat race #4, and
former NCRA champion Kyle Berck beat John Anderson in heat
race #5.
Joe Kosiski won the first B-main and Mike Wiarda thrilled
the crowd with a late race pass to win the second B-main.
Kelly Boen started the feature on the pole with the "Ice
Man" Delbert Smith to his right. On the drop of the green,
Boen jumped out to a comfortable lead over Smith and would
hold that lead until lapping a slower car would result in a
little paint being traded. Smith was able to get by and stay
in front to the checker for his 12th career NCRA feature
win. The top three looked familiar as it was the same as the
Mid-Nebraska show over Memorial Day weekend. It was Smith
winning with Boen second, and John Anderson third.
If this is any indication how the NCRA Speed Week is going
to go, the racing at the next four shows is a "must see."
The series moved on to Junction Motor Speedway in McCool
Junction, Neb., for tonight's show.
