MCCOOL
JUNCTION, Neb. (Aug 1, 2008)
–
John Anderson of Omaha, Nebraska took the lead on lap
four and never looked back to win the O'Reilly/NCRA late
model presented by ICM/Ethanol feature Friday night at
Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Nebraska.
The race was a co-sanctioned event with the Midwest Late
Model Racing Association (MLRA) and the Topless Outlaw
Racing Association (TORA).
After the eight car redraw which saw Terry Phillips and
Kelly Boen the top drivers in passing points, Travis
Roth and Larry Clawson started on the front row for the
twenty-five lap feature with Clawson jumping out into
the lead as the green flag fell. Anderson, who
started fifth, worked his way up into the third position
before taking over the runner up position from Roth one
lap later.
Lap four saw Anderson make a run down low on the leader
entering turns one and two and took the lead over
Clawson while three-time and defending series champion
Kelly Boen followed the Omaha, Nebraska veteran into the
second position. Clawson tried to keep pace but slapped
the wall coming out of turn two on lap later while the
first caution of the feature waved when Jason
Bodenhammer spun on the backstretch. Both drivers were
done for the night.
On the restart it was Anderson, followed by Boen, Travis
Dickes, Phillips and Roth as Boen challenged for the top
spot by running the top in turns one and two. Both
drivers raced side by side down the backstretch with
Anderson keeping the advantage. Meanwhile, the battle
for the second position was heating up as Phillips began
pressuring Boen for the runner up spot.
Anderson began to stretch his lead to ten car lengths as
the leaders began entering laped traffic on lap seven.
It was no problem for Anderson as he threaded his way
through the backmarkers with ease before the final
caution of the night fell on lap nine when Kelly Dunn
went for a spin in turn four on lap nine.
On the final restart Anderson again maintained control
and began separating himself from the rest of the field
as Boen and Phillips continued their battle for the
second position. Boen would eventually separate himself
from Phillips while back up front the leader opened a
half stretch lead by the races midway point.
It was smooth sailing the rest of the way as Anderson
went unchallenged to take the half stretch victory, his
first of the season for NCRA. Boen came home second with
Phillips settling for third. Dickes came home fourth
with David Turner rounding out the top five. Jeremy
Payne and Jason Friesen both put on the best passing
performance of the feature as Payne started
twenty-second and finished sixth while Friesen started
twenty-fourth and came home tenth.
The five, ten lap heat races for the fifty-three car
field were won by Dickes, Clawson, Eric Turner, Anderson
and Phillips. The three "B" features were won by Delbert
Smith, Joe Kosiski and Jason Bodenhammer.
