MCCOOL
JUNCTION, Neb. (Aug 2, 2008)
– Terry Phillips withstood a late race
caution with three laps to go and one final challenge
from John Anderson to win the final night of the "King
of the Hill Late Model Classic" as the O'Reilly/NCRA
late models presented by ICM/Ethanol wrapped up two
nights of action at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool
Junction, Nebraska Saturday night. The race was a
co-sanctioned event with the O'Reilly/Midwest Late Model
Racing Association (MLRA) and Topless Outlaw Racing
Association (TORA).
Jason Friesen of Sutton, Nebraska was scheduled to start
on the pole for the thirty-five lap feature finale but a
broken fuel pump as driviers were lining up for the
"A" ended his night early. This moved Phil Barrow up to
the pole but it was outside front row starter Kyle Berck
taking the lead as the green flag fell. Barrow settled
into the runnerup position followed by ninth starting
Phillips, Bo Egge and Gary Webb.
Berck, the current NCRA points leader, quickly opened a
ten car length advantage by lap three while behind him,
Phillips began pressuring Barrow for the runner up
position before finally taking over the second spot one
lap later as the pair came down the front stretch.
Phillips closed the deficit to five car lengths by lap
eight before Berck approached lapped traffic for the
first time on lap ten.
Phillips began reeling in the leader and closed the gap
to one car length and pressured Berck for the lead on
lap fourteen. One lap later drove low entering turns
three and four to take the lead.
The leader would began entering heavy lapped traffic on
lap ninteen but maintained a five car length advantage
over Berck. Anderson began made his charge to the front
as he was on Bercks rear bumper on lap twenty-five
before driving around Berck coming out of turn four to
take over the second position on lap 29.
Phillips looked to have his second NCRA feature victory
well in hand but Anderson kept cutting the lead down to
six car lengths. With two laps to go, Anderson got the
break that he needed as the only caution of the race
fell on with two laps to go when Bill Koons came to a
stop at the top of turn four.
This set up a three lap dash to the checkard and one
final attempt by Friday nights winner Anderson to take
the lead. But the Springfield, Missouri second
generation driver was not to be challenged and went on
to claim the six car length victory. Berck settled for
third while fourteenth starting Jeremy Payne threaded
his way through the field for the fourth place finish.
Three-time and defending series champion Kelly Boen
rounded out the top five.
Heat races for the forty-eight car field were won by
Webb, Barrow, Boen, Delbert Smith and Friesen with Al
Humphrey and Travis Dickes taking home the two "B"
feature honors.
