Boen Pulls Away to Fifth NCRA Late Model Victory
By David Smith, Jr.

PARK CITY, Kan. (Sept. 1, 2008) After taking the points lead with his runner up performance the night before in Belleville, three-time defending series champion Kelly Boen of Henderson, Colorado added to his points lead by winning Monday nights O'Reilly/NCRA late model presented by ICM/Ethanol feature at 81 Speedway. The victory was Kelly's second feature win of the weekend, winning Friday nights show at the track that was scheduled on last minutes notice.

By virtue of redraw, Boen started on the pole for the thirty lap feature but it was Bryant Goldsmith jumping out into the lead from his outside, front row starting position. Goldsmith opened a five car length lead by lap two over Boen with Delbert Smith, David Brack and Jimmy Seagraves all giving chase. The front two runners began pulling away from the field, however, as Boen began making his move for the lead, cutting his five car length deficit down to one.

Lapped traffic came into play on lap seven but Goldsmith, who came into the night fourth in series points, kept Boen at bay, working lapped traffic to his advantage. Lap ten saw Boen begin pressuring the leader as he tried two laps in succession to make slide jobs in turns three and four work to his advantage, only to see Goldsmith duck back under and regain the point. Lap fourteen it would come to and end as Boen would out run Goldsmith exiting turn two to take the lead.

It appeared the race was all but over as Boen and his Roadrunner Fabrication/Peterson Fluid Systems/Team GVS Racing/Afco sponsored Masterbuilt chassis quickly opened a ten car length advantage, all by working lapped traffic.

His lead would quickly evaporate as the features only caution would wave on lap 22 when Wylan Petrie came to a stop on the backstretch.

With the lapped cars getting their laps back and put to the tail of the field, things looked to be interesting again as, on the restart, Boen again jumped out front only to find tenth starting Al Purkey pass Goldsmith for the runner up position and set his sights on the leader.

But Boen was not to be caught on this night and he went the final eight laps unchallenged to win his fifth NCRA feature of the year. Eighth starting Kyle Berck, who lost his points lead the night before at Belleville, made a late race charge to get around Purkey to finish in the runner up position. Purkey settled for third followed by Goldsmith with Smith rounding out the top five. Mike Wiarda of Aurora, Nebraska put on a passing clinic, starting 22nd and working his way up to an eighth place finish. Jason Friesen of Sutton, Nebraska moved from his 18th starting position to 7th.

The three, eight lap heat races for the twenty-three car field were won by Berck, Brack and Shawn Harker.
