NCRA Late Model Champ
Boen Recuperating at Home
By Randy Fisher
After being involved in a serious
accident at Lakeside Speedway on April 28, Kelly Boen is home
recovering from his injuries. The two-time defending late model
series champion hit a rut and flipped his car during the
feature.
Boen
suffered a broken collarbone and a compression fracture of the
vertebra between his shoulder blades. Initial diagnosis is that
he would be out of action from three to five months. However, in
a May 3 telephone interview, Boen said he may not be out of
action quite that long.
Normally,
this type of injury would take roughly 16 weeks to heal. After
seeing a specialist in
Denver, Boen said the specialist told him they
might be able to expedite that time frame considerably.
“I’d
say in about eight weeks I’ll be back pretty close (80%) to peak
performance,” Boen said. “Anything
before that is a bonus.”
Kelly’s
Web site (www.07motorsports.com)
initially indicated he may be able to return by the NCRA late
model series opener May 25 in
Doniphan,
Neb. But Boen won’t
know any more until X-rays are taken again May 23.
“The
X-rays will tell no lies,” he said. “Whatever the X-ray says is
what we’ll do.”
Even
at that, Kelly said he doesn’t expect to be released May 23, but
did say, “As soon as they clear me, I’ll be back racing.”
